mp3 output for Premiere 6.0
Does anyone know how to output a video with mp3 audio encoded in it? Premiere 6.0 lets me output mp3 audio on its own, but when I output video & audio together the only choices I’m given are DV Audio, DSP Group TrueSpeech, GSM 6.1, CCITT u-Law, CCITT A-Law, Microsoft ADPCM, IMA ADPCM or uncompressed. I know I have an mp3 codec installed on my system. How do I get the mp3 to show up as an option for output?

In short, you don’t. You have to make the MP3 encoder show up as a DirectShow AVI audio codec, which I’ve not known to be common. (You can look hard on the Internet for one if you’re really jonesing for MP3 audio.) Your best bet otherwise is to use another application to convert the audio or the whole AVI file for you.

Hey, thanks for the reply.
I’m not necessarily jonesing for mp3 audio, I just need to be able to compress it in a nearly lossless way so that I can upload it to a website. I notice that when I compress the video to Divx, the uncompressed audio portion of the .avi can account for nearly half of the file size.
Do you know of any free 3rd party converters that will work?

Can’t recommend anything free off the top of my head, not for AVI anyway.
For web work, you should be using WMV, Quicktime, or MPEG-4/H.264. All will do a good job of maintaining the audio quality. (Personally, I recommend not using DivX. I’ve seen too many machines with video playback problems because that d***** thing screwed up the DirectShow filters. It also requires users to go fetch the codec if they don’t have it, which is a no-no if you can help it.)
You can do QT out of Premiere, though it’s not so good with keeping the file size down. You can do WMV, though I think you may need to scrounge up a component specifically for 6.5 from the Microsoft site. MS also has a free encoder/converter you can download, or you can just use Windows Movie Maker, which comes with XP.
For QT and MP4/H.264, QuickTime Pro does a fine job, and it’s only $20 or $30. Actually iTunes can make you an iPod compatible H.264 for free- just import the file and use the “Convert to iPod” option.

Thanks for all the replies. But I just don’t know that this is going to happen with my system as is.
Premiere actually had a QT H.264 output option. But some piece of hardware or software driver that I have doesn’t like that option because every time I try to output that way the computer crashes and I get the XP Blue Screen of Death.
I’ve also tried importing the original DV-avi into iTunes, but it just won’t import. I’ve tried dragging it in, I’ve tried clicking on “import”, and after I do it just doesn’t import the file. Is there a trick to that that I don’t know about?

I don’t think iTunes will take an AVI. Probably has to be a QuickTime file.
