I am looking to move to AVID MC. I have been using Final Cut for 5 years. I understand there is a learning curve and all of that. What I need to know is how my current media will work with AVID. I have captured it all with FCP. Will it work nicely? Also, I need a way of sharing media (not projects) between the two systems. Is there some intercompatable codec that works?

    First thing to learn…

Avid and FCP handle media completely differently and use different formats. FCP uses Quicktime, Avid usually uses MXF and/or OMF media (for the most part, anyway).

There is no “out of the box” easy way to share media between the two editing platforms. If you are willing to spend some bucks, you can get Automatic Duck, which will allow you to share sequences (not bins and projects), but otherwise you are going to give yourself huge headaches.
