Moving mouth of a video footage to sync with voice over
I need some advice or tutorial example to help me edit this video I have. This is a product video with a host talking about the product, the host missed an important word on part of his script so I need to make his mouth move in the video to fix the issue. This video was shot a several times, so I do have audio clip if the missing word as well as additional footage of videos that the host did read the script correctly, it’s just that the best shot I want to use has that missing word mistake. I have been on the web searching for ways to fix this and I see several mouth moving tutorials that’s based on still image so they won’t work… The current best bet I have in mind is to mask the part of good clip, feather it, and see if that blends in or not, but this video was shot in 1080p, so it seems like it’s going to be a little bit hard. I have not tried the method I had in mind because I want to see if anybody’s got any better advice?

You have probably thought of it, but is it possible to cut away to a shot of the product and dub the missing audio in then?

I doubt highly that you could feather in a cut-out of his mouth and make it look right but if his head was in exactly the same orientation on both shots it might work. Otherwise I would use a cut-away to some b-roll to cover the mistake as Phil suggested, or shoot it again.

Using a cut away would be the last choice… because I really don’t want to change the video flow because of this mistake. Got any other advice? Since the word is actually “watt” it’s really short and the mouth would just move once, it’s like a word like “Distribution” how the word itself requires a few movements.

If it’s a close up shot there isn’t much you can do. Anything you do is going to be noticeable. You can try and mask the mouth and use a section from another word that starts with a “w” but it will be really difficult to make it not noticeable.

If your shot of the presenter is a close-up or even MCU, then there is little hope of merging in a mouth shot unless you really have plenty of shares with Lady Luck. A viewer watches eyes and mouth, so anything less than perfect would be distracting and really stuff up your video flow. If the dialogue is about the product, it would not be distracting for a cut away to that product… we all want to see what is being discussed.
