  • Moving LaCie FW800 Drives to SATA?

Posted by Matt Burnell on August 26, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Just read Bob’s article on building a cheap SAN and I’m VERY excited. However, I have about 4 250gig FW800 LaCie drives that I would want to plug into the server and one eSata Lacie 2.5 TB drive. First off, would the FW 800 be fast enough given that they are on their own FW800 card (running off the Mac server). If not, is it possible to buy a SATA enclosure and pull the drives and build an array? Though my logic makes sense in my head, if there are obvious problems with this, please be gentle.

    Thanks, Matt

why do this, when you can put 3 raw 1TB SATA drives inside the MAC Pro, and share these. You still need a MAC Pro, a 4 port ethernet card, and a managed Gigabit ethernet switch (and someone to set it up for you). It just doesn’t “work”.

Many people want everything to be like a FW drive – just plug it in, and it works. SAN is not like this – AT ALL !!!!!!!!
