  • Moving FCE and FCP projects to new hard drives

Hi there, I’m a newbie moving from FCE to FCP and desperately trying to get my media management affairs in order. I have a tricky problem I’d like some help with.

I have a 650 GB final cut express project in HDV whose media files are spread between my imac’s hard drive and a 500 GB G-RAID2 external hard drive.

I’ve bought two more G-RAID2 drives, each 2TB, so now have 4TB extra space.

I want to consolidate all my media files onto a single 2TB external drive, which I will use as my ‘operating’ drive, and then use the spare 2TB drive as a backup.

The project is in FCE, which has no media manager. I have started upgrading to FCP and now have a copy of my project on my computer as an FCP file, accessing the same media.

I would like to keep both an FCE and a FCP version of my project, which both run off the same set of media files on my new 2TB drive. Also during this moving process I’d like to always have at least one full backup copy of everything while I’m shifting stuff around.

I can use FCP’s media manager to move a copy of the FCP onto my new hard drive, along with all my media files. After that i’ll simply open the duplicate FCP project, which will automatically access all the media files it needs via the new external hard drive.

That takes care of the FCP version, but I can’t open something as FCE after I’ve changed it to FCP. How do I keep an FCE version of the project that will also access the files from the new hard drive?

I would do it simply by using the ‘reconnect files’ function on FCE, but as far as I know you can only use that function after you try to open a project and are told that there are missing files. To work that way I would have to delete all the media files from their original locations on my desktop and old external hard drive first, and I don’t want to take that risk.

Sorry for the meandering post, but I don’t know how to put this all more concisely.

After all this I also need a workflow to continuously back up everything (FCE and FCP project files and media) to the extra drive I will use for storage.

Any tips, or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Greg
