  • Moving clips into secondary storyline

So I’m using the clips circled in red as audio-only. Originally they were below the primary storyline. Primary was/is a gap clip at this point.

To add some dissolves, I created a secondary out of the broll above it. When I did that, the clip that was below the primary moved above it. Made no change to playback. But now I’d like to put the clips circled in red into the secondary – again, just to keep things tidy.

Problem – I can’t figure out how to get them into the secondary, and not move things around in the secondary timeline!

You can only do this with a compound.

It’d be nice if you could “stack” clips in a secondarty, but currently, you can’t.

If you want all of those clips together, you have to group them together in a compound, or move the secondary clips in to the primary, and have all related clips attached.

You can also move the audio only clip below the primary if you’d like and spike everything to the gap.

when you say that the two circled clips were originally below the primary, do you mean to say that those clips were in the area typically reserved for the green audio clips? If so, then why not just drag them below again to “keep things tidy” as you say?

To answer your question though: secondary storylines are more similar to the primary storyline than they are to a regular connected clip. That is to say, you can’t stack multiple layers of clips in a secondary storyline. You can however select your secondary and your circled connected clips and create a compound clip if you’d like it all to be in one connected clip.

    Thanks JG.

Remember that spoof on YouTube of the editor in white limbo, talking about editing on a Mac, from years back? At the end he tosses the Mac across the room…. yeah, the joke is still valid. 😉
