  • Moving audio or video clips only out of viewer

I have searched the FCP help guide to no avail. I feel like this is the simplest thing yet I haven’t been able to figure it out.

After I make in/out points on a clip in the viewer how do I move audio or video only (not both together)? It seems there should be a simple key command or hold down a key while dragging the clip onto the timeline.

Please clue me in and I will forever be indebted to you.

    Thanks!

    SG,
Simple. All you need to do is disconnect the path panels for audio or video.

    I meant “Patch” panels.

In case you’re new to FCP and not sure what Kevin’s talking about, they’re the little lower case tabs on the left of your timeline tracks (the tracks themselves are labeled with the upper case tabs). Clicking on the lower case tabs will disconnect/connect them. If the audio is disconnected and the video connected, FCP will only insert video when you drag into the timeline video track (but it will place both if you drag all the way down to the audio tracks)… and vice versa. If they’re all disconnected, FCP will insert video if you drag to a video track, and audio if you drag to an audio track. If you leave only one video track connected, FCP will only insert one audio track (if there are two) with the video.

    Hope that helps.

    Best,
    Ben

Duh! Thanks so much. I’m actually not new to FCP but I never used the tabs before. I really should learn this program in and out…

Thanks again. I am no indebted to you, as promised.

Al of the above information is useless when you have AutoSleect in the mix.

AutoSelect is a seriously flawed intrusion into workflow. Vote NO on AutoSlect.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    Not exactly true Bog.
Auto Select comes into play AFTER the clip is edited into the timeline.
With that in mind, it’s easier to get your head wrapped around.

As far as dragging and dropping goes, it’s much faster and more pro to
use the F9 and F10 shortcuts for insert and overwrite.
