  • Moving an image in widescreen

I once knew how to do this, but have forgotten. I shot a project and have decided to add the widescreen matte. Of course, some images need adjusting up or down to look good. How do I do that? I thought it was done with a double click on the clip to open it in the viewer, then image & wireframe, then clicking and dragging the wireframe. But that moves the entire piece, both image and the widescreen matte; I just need to move the image. Your help is needed and appreciated.

I have FCP HD on a Mac G5. Thanks,

If you’re applying the widescreen filter, in the filter controls is an offset slider which will let you move the image up or down.

    All the best,

    Another method:

Simply add another Video track above the 4×3 footage on your timeline.
On it, edit the “Slug” and mask out the center area to the 16×9 aspect/position you want (with Mask Shape > Rectangle > Invert).

This will allow an easier way to “slide” the image around (you’d actually move the clip itself with the Motion tab) and the mask will just sit, positioned properly, on the track above.

What Matte says, or simply make a widescreen mask in After Effects or Photoshop and drop in a video track above all video tracks.
