I have been using this program almost daily for 10 months with only a few minor hitches along the way. Today it became serious. When opening Vegas it crashes when loading the files. At the bottom left where you can watch it load most of the time it stops at 11%. I wait and wait, but nothing changes, it’s stuck at 11%. Then of course it doesn’t always do that. Sometimes it loads all the way up but the second I move the cursor to do something, it crashes. A box comes up saying it has stopped working and you fill in what you were doing, hit send and who knows where it goes!

I am thinking perhaps I should try a re-install and so here is the question – Will I lose all my unfinished projects? I have weeks of work in some of them and really, really don’t want to start over.

No, you will not loose any unfinished projects. I would look into why this started all of a sudden. Something must have changed on your computer. What was it? Did you install any new software? Microsoft updates? get a virus?

You might want to restore to a previous time to get back to a state where it worked. Things don’t just stop working without a reason.

    Thanks John,
I’ve been racking my brain to see if anything has been different or what had been changed.I couldn’t play the footage files in either my Gom Player or Quicktime player as they said additional Codecs were needed to play the files. THAT was new, as I had no problems playing the clips earlier so I did some online research and all fingers pointed toward downloading the DivX codec pack. So I did and it appears that that is when the problem started. Why would my players say I needed new codecs when I hadn’t needed them previously? I removed all components of DivX and it started functioning normally until today. Now it loads to 14% and freezes(says Not Responding) so I shut it down and try again. Should I try a System Restore or just reload Vegas?

Well I went ahead and uninstalled Vegas and re-installed the latest version but, alas, no change. It froze up at 10% so I’m gonna try a system restore. I’ll let you know what happens.

It sounds like whatever media you installed the DivX codecs for is the one that’s causing the problem. Try renaming those files temporarily (e.g., just add a “_” in front of the name) so that Vegas can’t find them and tell Vegas to ignore the missing media when you open the project. That should at least get your project open. Then you can try converting those files to another format (like M-JPEG) that Vegas can edit easily.

    Thanks John.

It may be that the fight started when I replaced the proxy AVI files I was editing with the original AVCHD and MP4 files upon completion of editing. I am suspecting the MP4 files as they were from a different camera that I had never used before and the AVCHD files are from my regular camera.
I’ll give it a shot and let you know. This is what I get when I try to open it:
