  • Move node from group to clip(s)?

Posted by Brent Altomare on November 7, 2018 at 11:44 pm

This is probably a feature request, but I thought I’d ask the COW to see if I might be missing something.

    Here’s the concept:
I use groups quite a bit in my grading. Often I will have one correction that works for every clip in the group – until the camera pans slightly or the talent moves in one clip. I will then have to move a portion of the grade – but usually only one or 2 nodes – out of Group Pre (or Post) Clip into Clip so that I can keyframe/track/whatever that one node.

What I think would be awesome is if I could right click a node in Group Pre (or Post) Clip and “move node to clip” – and it would move that one node (removing it from the group) into every clip in that group.

I don’t want to collapse the entire grade – just one node – and I want it to happen across every clip in the group.

Is this a feature that exists?

What I do now is copy the node in the group, paste it into the individual clips, then remove the node from the group – but that’s not terribly efficient.

    Thanks!

You can copy that one node, then paste the contents to another node in the regular clip grade. But bear in mind you’d have to remove the clip from the Group grade first or else you’ll have two of the same nodes affecting the shot.

It would be possible to create a new group for that one shot, copy over all the nodes (using Gallery Stills), then delete the one node you don’t need.

I think you have to be very careful about keeping the node structure as simple as possible and not complicate this stuff. Tracking nodes would be the last thing I’d think about for a Group or Timeline grade. I think using a Pre-Clip grade for camera setup makes sense, and Post-Clip makes sense for a look (or a minor trim) affecting one entire scene made up of multiple shots. Much more than that, this can quickly become a house of cards that falls apart.

    Thanks Marc –

That’s exactly what I’m doing right now, and you described my problem perfectly. I want to take a node in a group grade, and collapse *just that node* into all the clips in the group. You can currently do that with the *entire* group grade – but I want to be able to do it with a single node.

Was just wondering if I was missing that function, or if someone had a workaround with fewer steps.

I’ll head over to Blackmagic to submit a feature request.

6 years later, I would just like to say I would love to see this feature.
