    Hello everyone,
I’ve recently tried importing a .mov file into premiere 5.5 and I get the error message: “the codec is missing or unavailable”. The file will only play in VLC, it will not play on any other media player. Not even Quicktime after an update. I’ve never had this issue before and I’m dumbfounded. I even tried uploading the file to YouTube just for kicks and YouTube was unable to process the file. The file is from a Sony handycam HD. Are there any codec solutions out there or converters that will tolerate this file? Any solutions/suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jamie

    Hey Jamie,
Sounds like you need to reactivate your royalty based codecs. Choose Help > Deactivate, restart Premiere Pro. then choose Help > Activate. That should help you.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi Jamie,

What can be helpful in Premiere is to use this method of importing –

    1) Copy ALL media from camera card to hard drive, all folders intact.

    2) In Premiere, use Media Browser for the actual import

    Thanks

Thanks everyone for your help. I was able to obtain the raw MTS files for import. This edit job is for a client and he had sent me these wacky mov files that wouldn’t import. Obtaining the MTS files was much easier.

    Thanks for your help!
