Like Noah wrote: You’ll have to transcode. Even with CS4 you’ll hardly be able to work with the native files. Native editing is possible since CS5 and since CS5.5 it’s working pretty flawlessly.

I’m still working on CS3 on my own computer for a couple of years now and with transcoded clips I haven’t run into trouble.

Just do a testrun. Transcode some clips with MPEGStreamclip or 5DtoRGB and import them to your NLE. Recommended codecs are Cineform and Avid DNxHD:

You don’t have to spend big bucks to upgrade. You can get a system for around $800 that will handle the video.

You can also go out and buy Adobe Premier Elements for around $70 and you’ll be good to go.
