  • Mouse cursor is top of the selection hierarchy? Can you turn that off?

I’m getting comfortable in FCPX, but there’s one thing that keeps tripping me up and that’s understanding the hierarchy in selecting clips or marking clips for editing.

When selecting a clip with C, or marking it with X, it appears that the mouse cursor is the first thing the program looks to when making the selection. Example: Your playhead is at 10 seconds but your mouse cursor is over a clip at 25 seconds and you hit C. It selects the clip at 25 seconds. If there’s no clip at 25 seconds, though, it selects the clip under your playhead (which is what I want). Or if your mouse is hovering in blank space it selects what’s under the playhead. Is there any way to turn off the “always select the clip under the mouse cursor first” behavior?

    Thanks.

Workaround is to move the mouse out of the timeline.

You probably have skimmer on? That takes priority. Turn it off with the S key.
