I was wondering how to achieve this kind of a look in After Effects ?
Is this done through shape layers ?

I would say its a result of extremely creative use of Photoshop and Illustrator elements in AE. Some of the multitudes of effects could be done with shape layers as well.
And extensive planning and design!

Wow, that’s really cool and very creative. In the comments he said:
“I sketch the Idea on paper & draw the basic Illustrator & do something on PTS :p, paste the shape on illustrator in shape layer on After effect.”

Very cool animation well done. My suspicion is that this is clever shape animation with faked 3D elements from Photoshop and Illustrator. There are a couple of tutorials online, I’m looking for the link to one but cannot remember where I saw it.
