The computer lab at our school recently updated to 10.4.8 and neither DVD SP 3 nor Motion 1.0 will run. The applications open but do not display all windows, cannot open or create files and de not allow preferences to be set.

All Pro App updates are installed. QT 7.1.3 on generation one G5 Quads 8 GB of RAM. FCP runs fine.

We have trashed prefs, created new users to test, repaired permissions all to no avail.

I’m cross posting to the DVD SP Forum.

    Any suggestions?

You didn’t get any warnings about hardware incompatibility when you were installing? I know Motion needs monster graphics cards to get going, and you mentioned having a first gen G5 quad…. I would think it’s card would be sufficient, but I’m not sure.

Is is possible for you to save all your project files to a disc or external hard drive, and chuck all your Studio Apps, and re-install them all from the ground up? I know it’s a pain, but many times, it’s worth it.

Is all your RAM Apple certified? I’ve heard that uncertified RAM can sometimes cause problems, but it seems to me that it would affect the rest of your system, not just 2 apps.

This might not be very helpful. Hopefully someone else will chime in with better tips. Good luck!!!

    Thanks for the reply.

The machines were all running Motion and DVDSP prior to ugrading to 10.4.8.

All Apple RAM and 6800 256MB video card. These are very capable systems.

    Heya,

If some windows are missing, then system’s version of ProKit (the Pro Apps’ UI framework) may be borked or otherwise incompatible. Try running the Pro Application Support updater found here: https://www.apple.com/support/downloads/proapplicationsupport31macosx104.html

It can’t hurt, and it may do the trick (PPC only, I believe).

    Good luck!

Also- an upgrade to FCP Studio with Motion 2 and DVDSP 4 would be highly advisable and relatively inexpensive. I kinda doubt Motion 1 and DVDSP 3 are being tested all that much with each new build of OS X as they are both several years old now.

Not to mention the additional tools and improved stability of M2…

    Done. specialcase’s suggestion worked.

    Thank you for your help.

An upgrade to the lab (50 seats) is currently not in the budget.
