Motion Blur Problem
Hi,
When rendering out recorded church sermons in Sony Vegas Pro 12, I have observed, with one speaker particularly (who seems to rock from side-to-side when he is speaking) what I imagine is ‘motion blur’ around the edge of his body and face. When he stands still things are fine, but when he sways from side-to-side, that’s when I notice a problem.
I have tried every conceivable setting I can think of, but although I may have found a way to reduce the problem I can’t seem to eliminate it altogether.
I always disable re-sample, and have tried using various deinterlace methods, such as Blend Fields, Interpolate Fields, and also have used the Yadif plugin (with None selected as the Deinterlace option in Sony Vegas Pro). Whilst things are better, the issue is still noticeable.
We are quite a conservative church, and the ‘swaying’ I have described is not indicative of any weird stuff going on, but just a natural action of moving off one foot onto the other 🙂
I will attach a couple of images to let you see my Project and Render settings in my previous attempt to understand the problem.
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

What format is your source footage? (i.e., why is your project 720-50p. Is there that much movement in church that you need 50 fps to capture it?)

Hi John,
We use a Panasonic AG-HMC41 Camera to shoot the footage, and the 720-50p is the current PAL source setting. I have tried to change the setting to 720-25p which the Record Menu in the camera does allow, but when I bring it into Sony Vegas Pro v12 to edit, it still shows it as being 720-50p, I don’t know why. I have raised this with Panasonic here in the UK, but so far have not had a reply.
I have therefore gone back to a source setting of 720-50p, so that in that respect Project and Render settings are the same.

Can you post a screen shot of what to think is motion blur? (because at 50 fps it probably is not) Or upload a short video clip that shows the problem. I can’t imagine this is motion blur.

Hi John,
Thanks again for your response. You may well be right, and it is not motion blur, but I didn’t know how else to describe the issue. That being said, here is a short clip where said speaker ‘sways’ off one foot onto the other as much as he stands still 🙂
I don’t think I see the ‘problem’ just because I’m looking for it, but to my eye from time-to-time there is a definate, maybe small, ghosting/blur effect around the upper body/face of this particular person.
There may well have been other examples where the ghosting/blur is more pronounced, but hopefully this example will suffice.

The other thing just to say is that the only ‘Effect’ I used in the editing was ‘Color Corrector’, with small tweaks using the High wheel, Saturation and Gain. Apart from that the settings were as per the Project & Render images I posted earlier.
I will be most interested in your thoughts.

I watched it twice. I didn’t see a single ghost. I watched his head, i watched his shirt, the whole thing was clear all the ay through. I don’t know what to tell you. If there is a particular frame it happens at let us know but I didn’t see it and I was looking for it.

Many thanks John for the time spent trying to help me resolve the issue. I have looked at some of the other videos on the site to which we upload our videos, and a couple were absolutely pin sharp, others exhibited various issues which may be attributed to project or render settings etc…, who can tell.
Just one more question, is it ever likely that the graphics card in a computer/laptop could show something on that machine but not on another which may have a more powerful graphics card installed? By the way, my card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470. I just wondered.
Whatever answer you give to the above, thank you again for trying to help, I truly appreciate it. Maybe I just need a new pair of spectacles! 🙂

Sure, anything is possible. This is why 3D tools don’t use GPU API’s like OpenGL for final render. They just use it to accelerate the preview. The final renders are always done by the CPU because different graphics cards may produce different results using their internal processing. (note: this is not true for compute processing like OpenCL, just for graphics processing like OpenGL) So yes, a less powerful card may show different results than a more powerful card because one can process the frame rate better than the other. Also really cheap LCD monitors may show ghosting because they can’t refresh the screen fast enough. The monitor refresh rate is an important thing to look for if you plan to use a monitor for gaming because most games update the monitor in excess of 60fps. Most newer LCD monitors (even cheap ones) are fast enough these days but in the early days, ghosting was a big complaint.
