  • Motion blur and masks – Way to change “shutter” timing?

On the latest project I’ve been working on, I’ve taken great pains to mask out a portion of the video, animating the mask essentially every frame for about ten seconds. I have determined that adding motion blur to the mask generates the most realistic look. However, the motion blur is giving me a problem.

I have already recognized that motion blur in AE trails behind the action, rather than keeping pace with it. It makes sense, sure. But not when it comes to masks. The result of such a phenomenon is that the resultant mask trails behind the actual mask defined by its vertices. It would make a great deal more sense if the motion blur transpired more evenly – and it would also go far in avoiding the uneven phenomenon I’m seeing.

So I guess what I’m after is some sort of shutter setting (or other effective fix) that will force a shift in the temporal nature of AE’s motion blur, from the trailing it does now to something more in between.

Have you tried adjusting Shutter Angle and Shutter phase?

Shutter Phase was what I was looking for. Thanks. Now if only it hadn’t been staring me in the face all that time. ;p
