Mother Of All Text Expressions
After lurking on here for a couple of years, I’m finally so desperate, I’ve made a profile and went to the ultimate source of all AE knowledge for me: Creative Cow! My understanding of how to even approach this has come almost entirely from posts here (and the incomparable comments from Dan Ebberts).
I am working to animate text to a reading of Canterbury Tales (sample text at bottom). The text has defined carriage-returns, and I’m animating the appearance of each word using markers on the layer that contains each line. Here is what I’m hoping to do inside each composition (one composition per page):
1. create a hidden text layer that contains the full text of the page. ref:

https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/227/38898#389002. do a txt.split that splits the first animated layer (Line_01) into a number of layers, based on that line count “_backslash_r”.
3. scale and sequence the resulting layers ref:

https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/227/18914#189204. read into each layer’s text field with the appropriate line text, based on layer name. (the text in Layer_2 would be “The droghte of march hath perced to the roote,”) re:
txt.split(“_backslash_r”)[thisLayer.name.replace(“Line_”,””)]5. map the number of words in the layer’s line as successive markers on the layer, divided by the in and out of the layer itself. (Layer_1 would have 7 spaced markers). Heres a sample adding makers using a precompiled timecode list. I would prefer to calculate based on actual layer time. ref:

I think you’ll need to hire someone to write a script for that.
