My shop has just switched from editing with Avid Newscutter on desktops with dual monitors to FCP7 on MacBook Pro 17 inch laptops.

Software presents no problems but I’m not getting much speed working on that small screen with it’s tiny icons (“large” is still too small) and timeline.

Any tips on how to maximize the real estate for the most efficient editing when speed is a must?

Example, is it possible to set up a single display for source and canvas and toggle with one key.

I’m sure many other folks are have had this problem when making the transition from desktop to laptop and I’d be interested in hearing how they resolved the issue.

    Thanks, JR

How about attaching a second monitor to the systems? Small 20″

That’s what some of the guys are talking about, we’ve still got one or two from the desk tops, but that’s down the road if ever.

And in anycase, the whole point of going with laptops was for the portability and a lot
of our editing is in the field in various locations and vehicles where a second monitor would not be available.

You can set up custom workspace arrangements and assign them each to custom hotkeys. Look under the windows layouts dropdown.

No, afraid not Jack, at least not exactly … but where theres a will there’s a way.

Simply use the “Two Up” window arrangement (Window menu > Arrange > Two Up) as a starting point (or whichever arrangement you prefer) then drag the viewer window so that it covers the same space as the canvas window. Rearrange your other windows to suit your preference (maybe add the Audio Mixer window or whatever you need) … now you can toggle between Canvas and Viewer with the “Q” key. Save the custom arrangement using the Window menu > Arrange > Save Window Layout command, and give it a suitable name (like “One Up”) and then you can invoke it as and when needed.

    Example:

    Hope it helps

You will have to play a bit with the windows and arrange them as you see fit for the task at hand. In my case I have about 20 window layouts that I use depending on what im doing. Editing, sound mixing, compositing, color correction, etc…. Each layout makes me the most efficient at a particular task.

This will be especially important with a laptop as you will definitely find one layout will not suit all your needs. My suggestion is start with the Standard layout and manipulate from there. Then save the name of the layout based on what you will use that layout for.

Yes, thanks for the tip… I’m hoping that’ll allow me to at least work with a bigger timeline.

Thanks, my needs, on a daily basis anyway, are pretty much meat and potatoes editing, where “no-error” speed is essential and I’m finding the small single monitor a real handicap.
    Thanks for the tips.
