More high res photos and info on HD100 etc

I like the DC in connection outside the battery compartment, and the large 1394 connector (those little 4 pins are too fragile for my liking).

Len says 5.5-88mm. Thats better than the other photo with 7mm-117mm shown.

The more I look at this camera the more I love it, which is only going to frustrate me more and more because I just won’t have the money for it for some time.

Looking at the ‘other’ side more, I think they would have been better putting two RCA audio connectors where the 6pin 1394 port is, and putting the 1394 port horizontally under the 1394 switch (not needing the Line Out mini plug.

Of course I can’t see whats under it, but I’m sure with the effort of the whole design process such a design could have been achieve.

Yes Guy the camera does have live video output that is the highest level component seen by the camera. It is 4:2:2. So clearly it is before the encoder.

After the encoder it is 4:2:0 MPEG-2 19Mbps GOP-6 1280x720p.

The audio channels for this camera are 2. Once again there is this confusion between this and the larger 2/3″ CMOS camera which is likely to be 4 channels of higher data rate audio.

I see people post about 50Mbps this or that. Actually this isn’t an applicable comment. For years we have shown 25Mbps D-theater tapes next to the Hollywood D5-HD masters and no one has aver been able to point to a part of an image or even motion and say “see that”.

IMX is/was 50Mbps but that is I-frame bound so it isn’t effective MPEG2. I personally thought it not as good as DigiBeta. To use 50Mbps for a GOP MPEG2 would really be very much more than is needed. People confuse this with DV since DV compression is their only frame of reference. So they look at 25Mbps DV and say well then 50Mbps is much better. But MPEG doesn’t go like that. Different animal.

So we will see in a week. Interestingly enough, the product people seem to be in a very happy mood. They think they have a special product.

I did a little non scientific test here, on the quality HDV can provide from a pretty much perfect source under perfect conditions (ie a high res still image downsampled).

The results were very interesting.

On one hand, it showed me that there is very little (none to my eye) difference between the visible colour resolution of 720p 4:2:0 and 720p uncompressed (4:2:2). This was very satisfying to see, and can only lead me to believe (unless my test is inherently flawed) that the difference we see in 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 cameras is much less about the colour resolution, and much more about the overall quality of the camera, lens and the size of the CCD block.

On the other hand, it showed me that while HDV totally craps over DV, at the current bit rates there is a hell of a lot of compression going on. Maybe I just happened to pick an area that suffered more than most, but in the close ups of the neck and necklace with only a 3x magnification from a 1:1 on my LCD (and my TV is about 3x my LCD size), there is almost no skin detail left on the neck and clearly there are large artifacts around the necklace itself.

Even if the Pinnacle encoder was not up to quality of the one in the HD100, the HD100 is going to have to deal with all that motion, which I would think might at least level the playing field with the test a bit, if not make the job much harder for the camera. It just has me thinking maybe the sweet spot for the data rate was a bit higher. Maybe I am over reacting though, after all I haven’t seen any real footage.

I have printed A4’s of every photo of the HD100 released though 😉

Does the first US ship date for the GY-HD100 still look to be sometime in June ’05?

If I’m not mistaken (and I may well be!), I believe this was mentioned here either by you or in a JVC press releases?

In any event, are you able to confirm this timeframe, even in general terms?

There was an effort a couple years ago to decide we would be a company that would actually make our dates.

I think we were late on the 500 five years ago and I think a real effort has been made to not do that. The 300 was on time. The 5000 was on time. The JY-HD10 was actually shipping to dealers the day we announced it. The latest projectors were in the month we said they would be.

But having said that, June is hard. But the camera is rather far along. So it could be doable. It just might be June.

It will be something to line a bunch of them up over the next 2 days and see what they do. Next week could be very busy.
