I followed advice as far as I can, but I can’t get the matte to work to hide the letters on 2D space. I have the comp in 3D and if I wanted I can manipulate the space, but I want to learn how to apply the matte.

I applied CC cylinder to the text layer. Where to I apply the matte. It seems if I apply it on the text before the CC effect, the text disappears when I apply CC Cylinder.

You should create two layers with the same text and CC cylinder, but the first on you set to render only the Ouside, the other to render the inside.
You only need to mask the inside layer, or just put it behind your golf ball layer.
