Monitoring racing audio
Hi all,
I film auto races for a living, and the majority of my camera work takes place down inside the pit area. Naturally it’s VERY noisy down there and it makes audio monitoring difficult. I’m plugging into a Sescom cable out of my H4N to monitor the audio that is being sent to my Canon 60D, and my regular around ear BOSE headphones don’t cancel enough noise to let me monitor accurately. In fact, I can hardly hear anything through them because they don’t block out the sound of the race cars.
I had been using a pair of my cousin’s Bose Quitecomfort noise canceling headphones, and while they did a fantastic job, I read that noise canceling technology works by canceling out certain sounds when it sends the sound into your ear.
So my question is, what is the best way to monitor my audio in such a loud environment? I was looking at a pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphones, but all the sound quality in the world is useless to me if I can’t hear it.

The HN-7506 from Trew Audio will do the job. Actually they are David Clark ear muffs with Sony 7506 drivers installed. About $300.

They must be quite some kit.
Ive been in the pits for formula 1 races here in the UK before and it is one noisy place. Id have doubted anything could really let you hear whats going on. Specialist kit indeed.
