Monitoring & HD editing
Hi All!
I have an opportunity to acquire a Mac Pro from one of my clients as a part of a deal.
I’m doing video editing with FCP and Avid MC for years, and have two questions.
The machine in question is a 4-core 3Ghz Mac Pro, with 6GBs of RAM, and 3TBs of storage, and with the original ATI card that shipped with the config ( I don’t know the modell, but it has 512MBs of VRAM. I’ll exchange this to a better one once I’ll have the money ).
So my questions are: Could I possibly edit full raster HD with this comp?
And also: is it possible to put another video card into this system ( or get a better one, and leave the current card in ), and use the DVI output of the second card for Digital Cinema Display monitoring?
Because I deeply need the two displays driven by a single card for editing and organizing footage, but I also would like to get a cheap monitoring solution for the time being ( and get something more serious later on )?

You’ll easily be able to edit 1920×1080 ProRes on this machine.
As far as the extra monitor goes, you might look at a Blackmagic Intensity card and a TV with HDMI instead of adding another graphics card. For $350, that Intensity Pro card is a great option with HDMI and component in and out.

The Intensity card I know, and I will probably buy that – or a more advanced solution in due time, but right now I want to eliminate the cost of a TV, and build some sort of client monitoring for the time being ( and extra computer monitors I have ).
So is there any chance to do the trick with the two video cards?

The computer will easily do HD. But you need the correct external array.
Also Color will not operate if you put a second gfx card in your machine. I would not go that route and would suggest an mxo if you want to go cheap
