My question to all is… How can you moitor analog audio using the meters wtih in FCP 5 while capturing? Also, I’m feeding my audio thru a Mackie mixer. I’ve spoken with Apple tech and I was told that you can’t watch levels while you are actually capturing footage, which I find hard to believe. I just got this system and my pervious 6 year old Media 100 system allowed me to watch my input levels while I digitized. Currently I’m using the meters on my Mackie. All I was told by Apple is that you should monitor your audio in the field and that way you won’t need to see what level is being input into the machine. As we all know everytime we shoot we always have perfect audio..HA
    Thanks in advance!

Tragically your Apple tech is correct.

If you’re capturing via firewire, as you probably know, it’s not “really” audio. It’s a data stream. There’s nothing you can do to alter them coming in, so there’s no real reason for FCP to divert valuable resources to driving the monitors. Although it sure would be nice to have monitors so one could keep an eye on levels!

If you just want to be able to actually hear the audio, you can turn on audio during capture by changing the capture preset. However, some report dropped frame issues when they change the capture settings to have the audio on during capture.

Otherwise, if you want to keep an eye on your audio levels to make notes for areas of concern, your deck likely has audio monitors. Use those instead!

Before you actually hit “capture”, in the log and capture window, you can do a test run of you audio and see the levels on the meters. If you have bars and tone on your tape just set the output levels of your mackie so you get the correct input level on the FCP meters, otherwise go to the hotest audio on the tape and set the level so that wont distort in FCP.
