I am wondering what method is best to monitor your video signal when you do:

    a) colour correction
    b) effects (especially motion effects)
    c) titles

    My questions are:

1.Can I do the monitoring on the actual PC screen in full-screen mode? (I’m getting the FX1500 with which I heard full-screen is possible) I know the colours are handeled differently and it only shows one field (I’m working mainly with 25i), but someone mentioned to me PC monitors with “true colours”.

    2. I have the Canopus ADV-110, which i could use as a transcoder for a broadcast monitor, but is there a point to buy a CRT (SD; cannot afford HD) if the finished products will most likely be shown on Plasma or LCD and HDTV?

Maybe someone can shed light on this, as all the different formats and the transition from SD to HD, and from CRT to LCD/Plasma make the whole monitoring issue confusing.

The other question is sound: I heard it is not wise to monitor the sound directly from the line-out port from the MOBO. Is it then better (for sound mixing) to lead the sound through the ADV-110, then through a mixer and then to the speakers? I want to use a mixer so I can switch the speaker sources between the PC line-out and the sound from the ADV-110-

Thanks a lot and sorry to post so many question in one post.

the short answer is yes but having a real NTSC componant monitor and utilizing a waveforem monitor and vectorscope is the only way to know what you are sending out.

lucky for you, AVID makes the MOJO interface box, that will let you monitor both audio AND video, and let you accomplish everything you want ! Isn’t that great ?

    Hi Bob,

Thanks a lot for your response. I am not so much concerned about how to get the video signal out. I think the ADV-110 is ok for now, and I cannot afford the mojo yet. I am more concerned how to actually check that signal. In your article on NLE systems you recommend having a CRT. However, I realise, especially in the UK, a very quick shift to LCD and Plasma TVs. I want to cater for all formats the show is destined for, so am I correct in saying that a proper CRT client monitor for CC and effects monitoring will cater for shows destined on Plasma/LCD AND normal SD TVs? I am asking because I want to invest in a good one, one that I can use even when Plasma/LCD TVs will predominate and CRT will fade out.

    Thanks a lot.

If you cannot afford an AVID Mojo, you cannot afford a good quality LCD or Plasma. Your first investment is the Mojo.
The cheapest LCD monitor you will want (and it is not a good one) is the new Sony LMD-2030.

Thanks for your reply Bob. I want to buy the Mojo SDI in a years time. In the meantime I would like to know if I can use an SD CRT client monitor (feeding it from the ADC-110) for doing colour correction and monitoring effects for shows destined to be watched on Plasma/LCD (either SD or HD). I mean, are the colours and effects going to look terribly different when exhibited?

Btw, I usually work with DVCAM/DV, HDV (and plan to integrated DVCPRO HD), and I output on DV tape (for broadcast) or DVD.

    Thanks.

    Hello Catalin,

You will not be able to colour correct properly using the computer monitor or from a S-Video or composite connection to a CRT SD Monitor. For accurate colour correction what you would need would be a dedicated Broadcast SD CRT or HD LCD/CRT Screen. CRT are better to go for but more expensive, If you look at sd/hd on a CRT and LCD you will see the difference instantly.

For low cost HD monitoring I use a Dell 2407WFP 24″ monitor, conencted by a Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme from the DVI out of the card from Blackmagic, obviously this will not work on a Avid setup.

For SD work, I use a dedicated Broadcast calibrated SD monitor with the output being fed from the Blackmagic outputs.

It will be very difficult to do your work using the setup you mentioned earlier for critical applications.

Transcoders like the one you mentioned will work well with Avid, but you’re not ever going to see anything higher than just native DV on your client monitor you are using.

If you are not doing broadcast and you setup your colour bars and calibrate your SD monitor with the device, then you might be okay if the colous look a bit off on other televisions etc.

    I hope that helps.
