  • Monitor Gamma Settings 1.8 vs. 2.2?

    Hello friends,

I have an Apple Cinema Display 23″ (Aluminum) that is about 4-5 years old and I am using it with my brand new 12-core station fitted with a Dreamcolor & Blackmagic setup for grading and color critical work.

I was just looking at the Display calibrator assistant settings in system preferences after remembering that I had QT Pro preferences for Final Cut compatibility checked – I am curious what it is supposed to be set to on both QT prefernces and the Display calibrator assistant – i.e. should they both be 1.8?

My second question: I am considering buying a 2nd matching monitor from Craigslist ($400 seems to be the going rate) but now that I research a little bit more it seems there might be some better options for my dual computer monitoring.

The November and Dec. issues of Post Magazine reviewed the NEC_models as a good option and I was comparing the specs but thought I would get some pro advice. The biggest difference I notice is the 1000:1 vs. apple’s 700:1 contrast ratio and the response time. What should I really care about here?

Any thoughts on this exhausted topic would be of great help…i dont like the Samsung’s I saw in the store too much, but I do want to stay around the 300-$500 range per monitor. Overall when I ask editors who have some of these newer 24″ NEC’s in there offices how they compare to the older Apple 23″ they say that while not as bright / saturated is just easier on the eyes with the older apple 23″ aluminum and better in terms of long days staring at a monitor.

any help or advice would be great as I just want to finish my studio build and move on.

    cheers

    Hi Sean,
Grading with an external pro monitor you shouldn’t care about how picture looks in any computer screen.
The FC’s Canvas at 2.2 and “QT-Final Cut compatibility” (2.2), made sense on a 1.8 Gamma screen.
All this should be unnecessary in Snow Leopard (2.2 native).
