Mojo audio problem when using digital cut to tape
Hello,
Has anyone had the following problem? When doing a digital cut to tape (sony a500) the audio lays down on to the tape with a strange distortion problem and the channel condition light turning red upon playback. For some reason this is only happening to me when I lay down to tape with the digital cut feature using deck control. When I lay down to tape playing out of my timeline with no deck control, upon playback the audio sounds perfect. Even when monitoring the audio going to the deck it sounds fine, it is only when playing back the recorded material does the audio play distorted. I have tried different decks with the same results. Perhaps I am setting something wrong on the deck? on the avid? I am going in analog.

You talk about problems with the audio, but what is happening to the video? Is the VTR getting good video from the Mojo? Are the VTR and Mojo both getting good black burst reference? If you are trying to record audio-only without feeding video to the VTR at the same time, that would produce the problem you are seeing.
The red channel condition indicates that you are getting uncoorectable data errors on your tape — big problem!

the VTR and the MOJO arent getting any blackburst reference. Could this be what the problem is? And would that result in the problem occuring only when doing a digital cut? Forgive the silly question, but how can I remedy this? Do I need a blackburst generator? or can I correct the problem with the existing equipment?

The lack of a black generator could be your entire problem. You can get away without one if you’re using only firewire, but it’s a necessity with the professional VTRs. The higher-end Avid systems come with an inexpensive black generator — it’s that important. You can find an inexpensive black generator with multiple outputs for $100-200 at almost any video supply dealer.
