Moire pattern when working with 3d shape layers and lights
Posted by Manuel Rodrigues on September 25, 2014 at 8:32 pmHi There,
Im working with 3d shape layers and lights and this combination generates strange circles. A moire like pattern. Please see image below.
(Shape look 3d but is actually a fat surface)
At first I thought is was the banding problem which one can fix but adding rgb noise or something like that but this looks completely different. And it does not go away when I add RGB noise or set the project to 32 bit.
What can I do to fix this?
Thanks in advance!

September 26, 2014 at 7:41 amWhen I disable the lights the banding is gone.
I’ve tried to play around with the material settings of the shape layers and the default setting don’t generate this pattern but when i pay around with the diffuse, specular, shininess and metal settings they appear…
EDIT:
Its when I set cast shadows to yess and a layers are on the exact same plane that the pattern appears…Anybody have a clue how to solve this?
Edit:
I have the z position, x and y rotation parameters of these planes hooked up separately to wiggle scripts of which i can manipulate the size and rate by sliders. Setting the z offset and x and y rotation to 0,2 results in a visible of set in position and does not solve the banding.

It’s an issue of it trying to cast shadows and such.– The Great Szalam

Solved by changing the angle in which the light hits the 3d shape layers..!

September 26, 2014 at 2:03 pmHi Micheal,
As I tried to point out in a previous post i tried to separate them in 3d space. I already had a wiggle script attached to the z axis and could thus set all separate shape layers to a smal offset (0.2 pix) in z space. Even tried to rotate them very slightly but this did not work. Changing the angle in which te light hit the shape layers solved my problem.
Thank you for your input anyhow!
Now back to work 😉

September 26, 2014 at 6:40 pmThis is an age-old problem with the Advanced/Classic 3D Renderer which has had issues with drawing shadows. ‘Solutions’ include using the ray-trace renderer, switching off shadow-casting and re-positiong/re-orienting lights.
