Is it possible to modify the Z position of a 3D layer by the Luminance or transparency value of another layer using expressions?
Just trying to recreate a more realistic Displacement effect than the one found under the Distort menu by animating the Z position of each one of a group of illustrator shape layers.
Thank you very much for any suggestions?

Can’t do it with native After Effects. Check out Color Sampler in Digital Anarchy’s Anarchy Toolbox.
