  • Modeling: Used a SubDivision, now want to use a deformer..

If I’ve used a SubDivision to smooth an extruded spline out and I now want to make that an object where I can then use a deformer, how can i do that?

    My layers look like:
    Subdivision Surface
    -Extrude
    –star-base (the spline I drew)

This has been a general question of mine…how to take a model one has created via use of deformers and such, and then “expand” them so that they are a single object as if you’ve pulled down a sphere, cube, cone etc.

I’m making a stylized figure whose body is somewhat like “Duke” the java mascot from some time ago and so far, drawing the spline for the overall shape, extruding that spline and then rounding it off with the subdivision surface has been my way.

I thought about just building it ‘blocky’ and then subdivision surface, but then when I would want to use a deformer, I’d be in the same boat.

deformers work either as the child of an object or at the same level as an object in a group (usually in a null)

    so, either

    Subdivision Surface
    -Extrude
    –star-base
    —deformer

    or

    Null
    -deformer
    -Subdivision Surface
    –Extrude
    —star-base
