Modeling Abstract Trees (Link)
Posted by Evan Seitz on December 26, 2010 at 11:17 pmHey guys –
how can I model the trees shown in this clip:
I tried aligning cylinders on a cloner object linked to a pyramid, set to edges – but to no avail… 🙁
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

December 27, 2010 at 4:01 amHere’s how I would do it:
Clone a straight spline along another straight spline;
Use a random effector to rotate the splines along the axis of the trunk spline;
Use a step effector to scalet the clones into the cone shape;
Drop the cloner into a connector object to make it a single spline object;
Sweep a circle spline along the resulting branch spline with a sweep nurbs object.
Example (R12 file): 1437_xmastreecloner.c4d.zip

December 27, 2010 at 4:20 amEverything worked for me except for your last step, which I have set up like this:
Sweep Nurbs
|_Circle
|_Connect Object
|_Cloner Object
|_SplineThe connector object isn’t cooperating with the Sweep Nurb structure, including when I try putting it into a Null Object, etc…
Is this something that r11.5 can do or just r12?

December 27, 2010 at 4:21 amOops, like this:
Sweep Nurbs
|_Circle
|_Connect Object
…|_Cloner Object
……|_Spline -

December 27, 2010 at 4:49 amYeah, I think that the connect object didn’t work with splines prior to R12. What you could do is make the cloner editable and connect the resulting splines, or just clone cylinders instead of splines and skip the sweep nurbs altogether.
