I have tracked an object, and when I Apply Matte, nothing seems to happen, however, when I View Matte, the black and white matte can be seen.

The applied matte is only visible if I’m zoomed out to 25%.

Is there some secret setting I need to change?

You should probably go through some basic tutorials. You can find a bunch of them at the BorisFX website.
