  • Mixing video with 32k audio and video with 48k audio in one project – problems

So I got this project from hell – about 16 hrs of video. Half at 32k and half at 48k – inexperienced crew. What to do? First idea was to capture the video shot at 32k, analog through an outbourd converter, but I rejected this as a firt option because of loss in video quality and II did the following test:

I captured the 48k source at 48k. Then I captured the video and audio of the 32k source seperately, changing the capture setting for the audio to 32k. (The first odd thing was that the duration that showed in the browser for the 32k audio was slightly shortly than it should be, but when cut into a sequence it was correct.)

I exported each 32k audio clip from a 32k sequence to aif at 48k and imported the aifs. So far so good. The durations of the imported audio matched the durations of the video in the browser.

Next, I edited the converted 48k aifs in sync to the video of the video shot with 32k audio in a 48k sequence. Now what happened was that the VIDEO ended up slightly longer than it’s proper duration. Amazingly the audio seems toremain in sync but stops short of the end of the video clip.

Can anyone tell me what’s going on here please?

if i were you, i’d simply capture the 32k tapes at 48.
or capture one, and see if you get any problems.
    chances are you wont.

i dont knbow why you are getting duration discrepancies, but as loing as you dont have to render the picture, i guess the frame-rate is true.
i’ve had a slightly similar experience trying to export 44.1k audio out to 48k.
the end of the track was getting chopped off.
i used itunes in the end.

    you could try that….
batch export as QTMovies, audio only, same settings, dont use in/outs
bring into iTunes, convert to 48k AIFFs

but as i said, i’d be tempted just capture the tapes again at 48.

    cheers,
    nick
