I have two pieces of footage I want to edit into one piece. The new footage is hd 16:9 (shot with Panasonic gh1). The old footage was shot with a Canon XL1 and is sd 4:3. Can I mix the footage into the same timeline? The final piece does not need to be hd. How do I do this? Thanks in advance for the help.

you can drop them into the same timeline. Then, of course, one will display in the incorrect aspect ration.
Decide on your final format/ration etc. Make the timeline (sequence) in that format. Then drop the clips into the timeline making sure to keep the sequence settings if it asks you to change them. Then use the motion tab to adjust the “bad” clip to the correct size/shape/framing.

Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.
