  • Mixing Panasonic AVCHD and Nikon D7000 video on the Vegas Timeline

Hey guys, having an annoying problem and I wanted to consult the community.

I recently did a shoot with a Panasonic HMC150 as the A-cam shooting AVCHD at 1080/60i. The B-cam was a Nikon D7000 which shoots h.264 .MOV at 1080/24p.

I’ve had no problems editing the footage from either camera in Vegas before, but this was the first time I’ve done a complex edit using both cameras on the same timeline. Since the Panasonic was the A-cam the project settings are currently HD1080/60, and the a-roll edit went smooth.

However, once I added all my B-roll from the Nikon, my PC (i7 quad core with 4GB ram) and Vegas had some serious problems playing back the mixed format video. Clips will go black, or just not show in preview at all. And to make matters worse I can’t render the piece, first it will give me an error that I’m low on memory (physical memory usage is at 2.4gb at the moment) then it will simply crash Vegas entirely.

Clearly the complexity of the edit and the 2 different video formats are the possible sources of my problem.

What I’m wondering is, what’s worse? Mixing AVCHD .mts files and H.264 .mov files, or mixing 60i video with 24p video?

My plan now is to convert the .mov files from the nikon to 29.97fps and see if that helps. I’m also thinking about converting the .mts files to 24fps h.264 files. I’m still looking into the best way to do that.

When I delete all the Nikon clips from my Vegas timeline, I still can’t render just the a-roll, it’s like the second format has “corrupted” my edit. However, I’ve managed to copy all the a-roll from one timeline to another, and then it works well.

If anyone has ever experienced something like this and has any pointers at all, I’d greatly appreciate it. The community has been helpful to me in the past. Thanks again, guys.

Sorry, didn’t include some important info:

    I’m running Vegas Pro 9.0e 64-bit on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

Again, the system is an i7, 4GB ram, GeForce 8800GTS video card.

Had somewhat of a similar problem with certain footage from a client
recently whom had used a Nikon series and i was using Vegas 9.0e…..
Couldnt complete my renders….So i decided to finally use
Vegas 10.0e, and it was smooth sailing after that.

    Steve,

    Thanks for the tip!

I downloaded and installed 10, and it seems to be rendering fine now.

Up until this point I found preview playback very slow with the Nikon clips. (AVCHD and h.264 are both so heavily compressed it’s hellish on a CPU)

Did you find preview playback any smoother in Vegas 10 than Vegas 9?

    Thanks again,

    Mike

Yep….The preview playback is a bit smoother in Vegas 10.
