    I’m currently working on a project that will be shot primarily with my HPX300, however, two locations will have to use the HVX200 (the older version). I plan on using the AVC-50 1440×1080 format shooting 30pn with my HPX300. The HVX200 will have to shoot 1280×1080 at 30p. Has anyone found a good solution for mixing 1280×1080 footage with higher res 1440 or even 1920x 1080 footage in the same sequence in FCP. I suppose I could downscall the 1440×1080 footage, but that seems like an awful waste of picture resolution and time consuming. Is there a third party plugin for FCP or applicaton that will improve upscaling the 1280×1080 footage to 1440×1080?

    Uh…dude. They both scale up to the proper 1920×1080 dimensions. Both are anamorphic formats, but DVCPRO HD is just a tad more so. Just use a ProRes 1920×1080 sequence…what the AVCIntra footage should be imported as. Don’t work with the AVCIntra footage natively…there is no AVCI sequence settings, so you’d be using ProRes anyway, and you’d be rendering, so just convert it from the start and get it over with. Then you have 1920×1080 Prores, and you’ll be adding 1280×1080 DVCPRO HD, which will scale to 1920×1080 just fine.

    Sometimes you just gotta test things out to see how they work.

    Yes I already know that working in ProRes 1920×1080 or 1440×1080 sequence in FCP via Log and transfer of MXF files instead of native AVC setting is the way to go since FCP does not have an AVC 100 or AVC 50 sequence preset, but thanks for confirming that. And yes I have tried some tests, particularly with upscaling 1440×1080 footage into a 1920×1080 sequence and I can clearly see a loss in picture quality. I just let FCP handle the upscaling and render, so if you say it upscales to 1920×1080 just fine then perhaps I’m missing something because the results I get are not acceptable. And based on this I imagine upscaling from 1280×1080 to 1920×1080 would be even worse.

    I don’t know what you are talking about…UPSCALING 1440 to 1920. There is no UPSCALING. There is taking the anamorphic format of 1440×1080 and unsqueezing it to 1920×1080. No process is occuring that CONVERTS the footage. EVERY NLE does this. I fail to see what you mean by quality loss. There is none.

    You are working under false assumptions and doing something way wrong.

    RENDER? why are you rendering? There should be ZERO rendering involved.

    There is no such thing as a ProRes 1440×1080 sequence. ProRes is only 1920×1080, or 1280×720. If you have footage that is ProRes 1440×1080, you have done something wrong. When FCP imports the footage via log and transfer, it converts it from AVCI 1440×1080 to ProRes 1920×1080. If you are getting a different result, you are doing something wrong.

    Everything you are saying indicates that you aren’t doing things right.

    Keep your project simple. Choose 1 and only 1 format to shoot. If you want to shoot pn, shoot 720/30pn.

    Everything Shane told you is absolutely correct. You clearly have a fly in the ointment that is screwing up your workflow. Follow Shane’s advice and you will be in good shape. Or as Steve said select one format and stick with that.

    And how are you monitoring this?

    Why shoot AVCI-50 when you can shoot full raster avc-i 100?

    Won’t the HVX200 footage lose sharpness as it’s upscaled? I am preparing to shoot a network pilot with HPX300 @ 30PN and HVX200 as second camera. I ‘ve run a test and on monitor it looks ok, but on HD TV it might be more apparent. Is there any loss at all by upscaling the HVX200 1080i 30p?

    Thanks for any more insights.
