Mixing DSLR footage with DV-NTSC
Hi. Kinda weirded out here. Am making a demo reel for someone. She gave me a lot of video files that don’t look so hot. A lot of .mov’s and mpegs with artifacts and pixellation, but it’s at least passable. Here’s the reel. it’s the 2nd video clip, where she’s dressed as a goth chick.

As you can see, the quality on the whole vid isn’t great, but I think it’s OK for what it is. What’s weird, though, is that I shot the one where she’s in the goth outfit, so I have the original 7D footage, and yet I think mine looks worse than everybody else’s. And those were just from compressed video files.
My process was, used the dv-ntsc preset since everything seemed to be 720×480, and then I put in my footage as well as the others and just scaled to frame size. I figured it’s down-res’ing, so it would retain the great quality, and yet when I look at it, I think my footage looks worse. I even used dynamic link and imported the original timeline and scaled that to frame size. Same thing.
Question is, am I missing something? Why would my original footage look worse when I drop from 1920×1080 to 720×480? Did I need to do something else?
