Mixed Frame rate 30fps to 29.97 P2 footage
I am working on a project in which nearly all of my footage is DVCpro HD 720p60 29.97fps. I have a whole 32gig P2 card of footage shot DVCpro HD 720p60 30fps. I am looking for the quickest work around to fix the footage. The audio is considerably off, 10-15 seconds by the end of the clips. The footage looks great and sound is in sync while in the log and transfer window. Can someone please help direct me in the right direction. I have tried many solutions but need a helping hand. Thanks.

You could take the 30fps footage into Cinema Tools and conform it to 29.97.
Just out of curiosity, what camera did you use to get a 720p60 29.97 clip?

Hey Tony, I have already tried cinema tools, compressor, even tried re-outputting to cam with live capture, but that failed bc of different reasons. I believe this cam was a HPX370.

Ok, well my limited knowledge of the HPX370, is that it’s like all DVCPro cams… if it was recorded 720p30 then it really is 720p60 with flags inserted to tell the computer that it is actually 30 (well 29.97). If it was recorded 720p30N (native) then it doesn’t record duplicated frames (like in 720p60 mode) but just the 30 frames so an editing program should know the difference.
What I am getting at is you said FCP is seeing the footage as 720p60 so maybe you could try loading in the footage in 720p60 (instead of 30) straight off the camera and either remove the duplicate frames later with the DVCPro Frame Rate tool in FCP or just edit in a 720p60 (59.94) timeline.

That camera doesn’t record 30fps straight up. 30fps is 29.97. But 720p is also a 60p format…meaning 59.94. But that camera shoots 720p 30pN…which is 29.97fps. SO you can have 720p60 at 59.94, or 720p30 at 29.97. But not 720p30 at 30fps…the camera doesn’t shoot that format.

I believe the issue is the footage has duplicate frames but I can not get FCP to remove them and can not find any other way to deal with the issue. When I go from frame to frame in the viewer the footage frames skip 2 4 6 8 up to 58 the DVCpro tool wont work.

If the frames are skipping in the viewer like that than the clip has already had its duplicate frames removed so it should be 720p30 at 29.97. What settings did you use to import the clips?

If the P2 footage is off you need to go to the Log and transfer window and go to preferences (it’s the little button at the top right of the media duration column) under preferences make sure that the checkbox for “Remove advanced pulldown …” is UNchecked and then re-import. If it already was unchecked, I would try checking it and then re-importing.
