  • Mixed Formats (SD & HD) problem with rendering and achieving YOUTUBE HD

(I’m a novice to Vegas, usually edit on FCP, so excuse me if some terms are incorrect).

We are trying to render a 75 minute film for youtube (Goal is to have a 1-2gb file). The timeline has a combination of SD, HD and photos. (Some SD was shot in 4:3 other was shot in Widescreen SD 16:9). We are looking to create it so it will be HQ(HD) on YOUTUBE.

We read on forums that you need to have a 1280 x 720 project setting, which we did. But the problem is with the mixed formats we have to uncheck “maintain aspect ratio” (to remove the black bars for some sd shots) and the file will not upload to Youtube as a HD (HQ) clip.

    1. What is the best way to organize the project for render with a combination of formats? -Currently if we do 1280 x 720, many of the SD or widescreen SD either have black boxes around the entire clip or have a thin black line on top and bottom.

    2. What is the best way to render out the project with mixed formats to obatin youtube HD?
    – We have tried a combination of 1280 x 720 wmv (4m quality), keeping original size. And a combination of streched and unstreched to fit.

When I have to mix between SD and HD, I always “convert” all my SD clips into the HD resolution before import them into the HD timeline. Basically, I create a temporary project. Put my SD clips there. Crop, Zoom etc to the 16:9 ratio then render it out using the lossless codec.

Then I continue to work as if I have everything in HD resolution. Render out to h.264 10Mbps, LAME MP3 for you tube.

I need to mention that I am also a newbie with Vegas. I tried out the Pro version and really like it.
