Mixed formats…. i’m going nuts thinking about this!
Morning all,
I have a job on at the moment where we’ve shot a presenter against green screen @ 1440. He then wants his keynote presentation edited against that but stupidly i exported it as a mov file at 1440 not 1920. All looked fine during an export test at the start of the project so i plowed on and have now, 90% of the way through the edit, found a couple of slides that are noticeably squashed. Personally i think they’re acceptable but the client doesn’t agree.
I don’t particularly want to have to re-edit the whole lot as it’s taken about 20 hours so far but from what i can see the options are; 1. re-export the keynote at 1920 and re-edit. 2. re-export the keynote at 1920 and re-connect the media hoping the edits fall in the same place. 3. something else i haven’t thought of!
I’ve tried fiddling with all the sequence settings as well but that doesn’t help without affecting the 1440 footage obviously.
Any suggestions would be grately appreciated… this is getting miserable!!

1440 is an anamorphic of 1920×1080. If you bring your footage into FCP correctly, it would have crated a 1920×1080 sequence. Assuming your footage is HDV, the best way to deal with the footage is to transcode it to ProRes. That being said, you can try to copy your original sequence, create a ProRes 1920×1080 sequence and paste that into the ProRes sequence. Render away export and you should have the correct result.

Thanks Steve, yes all footage is in pro res and i’ve tried copying everything into a new 1920 timeline. I also re-exported the keynote at 1920 this afternoon and re-connected this file to the sequence. The result is that the background now looks fine but my 1440 footage is now squashed. Any ideas?

If you started with ProRes footage your sequence setting should be ProRes 1920×1080.

Yes it is but as i say my 1440 source is now squashed. don’t get it.

If you are copying directly out of the 1440 sequence and pasting into the 1920 sequence then clip size, scaling and/or aspect ratio attributes applied by the 1440 sequence will still be present in the 1920 sequence. This will cause the clips to not be displayed properly. I would suggest editing a 1440 clip into the 1920 sequence. That clip should look fine as the 1920 sequence would have applied the proper re-sizing attributes. You can then copy and paste the attributes from that correct looking 1440 clip to all the other 1440 clips in the timeline that are not displaying correctly.

Andrew, thanks yes i think that’s pretty much what i did this afternoon. My fatal mistake was starting with a 1440 sequence, i should have just let FCP do it’s thing!
