Thanks for your reply to my earlier post “Compound headache”. Unfortunately, I was unable to get the required results following your advice. I created a new document and with the pen tool I drew the word D O O R. On a separate layer I drew the insides of the letters (O,O,R). I then cut them out, pasted in front on another layer and grouped them. I then selected them whilst simultaneously selecting the outside letters. I created a mask and got an outline of the letters but I was unable to manipulate these in any way. I couldn’t add fill nor stroke. What am I doing wrong? -

Do exactly what you did, but don’t group. Your objective is to make a compound path with no extra groups or compound paths.
