Migrating an edit from FCP to Avid
I have been asked to take over an edit that has been started on FCP. It’s an HDCAM EX project, so all the media has come in from cards.
The director has suggested that we could either continue in FCP or change to using Avid.
I have no experience of Automatic Duck or similar and am wondering if migrating a project like this is feasible.
In the good old days of tape I would have thought that offlining in FCP and then outputting an EDL or Automatic Duck-ing the sequence to Avid would be fine. But when it’s a question of working with HD footage off cards for the offline and online, can you still change from one piece of software to another like that.
I’m assuming that FCP media files can’t be read in Avid and vice versa?

If the XDCam EX files were transcoded to Pro Res 422, then the new Media Composer 5 is advertised to be able to read those quicktime files. I haven’t done it personally, but I haven’t heard of any issues other than you will eventually have to transcode to DNxHD if you want to kick out an AAF for audio mixing.
As far as converting the sequence, Automatic Duck is the way to go, but I’m not positive that it will retain the group clips.

If the footage has been converted to ProRes, as mentioned, you can bring it over.
Sequences can be brought over via Automatic Duck.
What cannot be converted is any and all organization you have already done. No bins, no logging information in other fields…none of that. If you can, stick with FCP. IMHO.
