  • Mid-side or XY stereo on the Zoom H2n?

I just got a Zoom H2n handy recorder to replace my H2, and it comes with a nifty mid-side recording feature. I didn’t really know what it meant to record mid-side, so I read up on it. From what I can gather, the mid-side mode is just a fancy way to record stereo, but should give the same result as the usual XY mode.
So what is the difference between the modes, and how should I choose which mode to use when recording? Are there any recording situations where mid-side would be better than XY?

Hello David and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

M/S recording keeps the options open during shooting and is usually done to allow varying the width of the audio during postproduction when you don’t know whether the audio will be used on a wide shot or closeup.
