  • Mic’s for ambient recording

I’m looking for suggestions on mic’s good for ambient recording.

I have my Audio Technia AT897’s but need 2 mics for ambient recording from my Marantz PDM660. Also have the AT2020 for voice overs and 2 Shure SM11’s.

For example I have my AT897 on a boom pole to capture a dedication at a Church but would also like 2 stand mounted (I guess, figure-8) mics, one pointed at the choir and another at the congregation.

This is the best example I can give. I’m still learning the various microphones (dynamic vs condenser) so I’d appreciate any help or suggestions.
    Thanks
    Allen

    Hi Will
Thanks for your reply. I can only say WOW! Never heard of these before. A little too pricey for my wallet though. What’s toward the bottom of the food chain then?

What about a Samson CO-3 or Beyer M130? I’m trying to gather information and somewhere I heard about these.

Not familiar with the Samson but the M130 is an excellent stereo mic for your purposes.

Haven’t studied the mic’s but if the Beyer M130 is stereo, then I should need only 1? I’d plan to connect the auxiliary mic’s to my Marantz PDM 660 which has 2 XLR connections plus phantom power. I have 2 stage stands with short booms. For the main subject, I’d use either my wireless system or the AT897 on a boom pole to the camera. Currently I have the Sony VX2000 with the Sign Video XLR adapter.

I noticed on eBay a while ago that someone was selling a new PDM670 with a free Rode NT3. I didn’t purchase it because I got a better deal on the 660 that came with 2 boundry mics. Quite a savings as I didn’t need all the features of the 670. PCM/WAV and MP3 mono/stereo is all I needed. Sometimes for my video work, I convert the Wav to OGG for use in Vegas Video.

When I do my technical railway video work, I use the Shure SM11’s taped with gaffer’s tape outside the window to pick up the ambient sounds.
    Thanks for your help.

When I worked news, an ev635 served well as a presence mic, but now that I freelance I use a schoeps mk41 or mk5 which switches between cardiod and omni.

By the way, are you going to NAB? We got to meet up sometime. We’re both in the same town.

    Thanks all who offered suggestions.

I wound up purchasing 2 Rode NT3 mics. Got a good deal on them and I think they’re well suited for my purpose.

    Thanks again
