Mic For DVD Commentary
I’m looking for a mic to use it for dvd commentary. We have two mic preamps. They are Focusrite ISA 428 and Presonus M80.
We recorded DVD commentary in our vo booth about five times for two to four people. We rented the Sennheiser MKH 416 and hook it up to Focusrite mic preamps then to Protools. It works fine.
For this kind of purpose, which mic do you recommend.

If you have achieved the desired results with the microphone you rented, why not purchase the same model?
I do rather enjoy a close-mic’d speaking voice with a nice shotgun microphone. 🙂
However, first you need to provide us with a budget. The Neumann U87 or something from the TLM series are both familiar V/O and studio mics. Others are:
Electrovoice RE20
Shure SM7 (or the newer SM7B)
Rode NT1-A
Sony C48 (Very warm, solid-state microphone)Ribbon microphones of any type would be a great pick. Royer, AEA, and Shure (who acquired Crowley & Tripp microphones) are all great models.

I heard good reviews of Neumann U87, but it’s expensive. It’s over our budget. I’ll check your suggested mic list.

Hello Lot and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.
The new Neumann TLM 102 is a good place to start. It’s new for Neumann and does quite nicely for voice.
This is for VO, not on camera, right?

Ty recently purchased a TLM102, I believe. I heard the recording of it with an acoustic guitar an was pretty impressed. I wasn’t listening through reference monitors or anything, but most clients won’t be either.
Make sure you audition your mixed/remixed material through sources similar to those your clients will be listening to.

Well, sure: you just have to feed them some P48 and exercise their diaphragms. They can get a little stiff from being in the mic locker for too long, ya know?

Hello Ty.
It’s for DVD commentary. The movie cast will talk about the feature in the sound booth while they are watching it. They will hear the feature and the conversation from the headphones. They’ll talk thru the microphones, then goes to mic preamps (focusrite ISA 428) then to Protools.
The Neumann TLM is 102 is over our budget. How about around $500 or less?

I’d put them on a Countryman E6, over the ear. That way you don’t have to worry about keeping them on mic. It’ll be much more casual and you’ll still get good sound.
