Do people have favorite apps they use for this? I believe there are free ones out there, such as one I’ve used called Download Helper, but I’ve had a tough time with free ones I’ve tried. So I’d be grateful for any recommendations. To save myself the hassle, I’m considering buying the one below, and just wondered if people know it or prefer others? I’ve used Wondershare before and it’s been the best one I’ve found.

BTW I know one needs permission to use any content. But for rough drafts, I often find myself needing to download Youtube and other videos to get a sense for what content works, before reaching out to any content authors.

    Much appreciated,

    Neil

Not really any favorites, and I bristle at paying for a downloader. Right now I use various free ones that pop up thru a google search. Many of those are trying to get you to buy their downloader product but they look sketchy and might be hawking malware to me. I used to be able to download YouTubes by typing “ss” into the URL just ahead of the first letter in the name. Didn’t YT themselves offer a downloading link at one time?

Thank you Mark as always! That ss thing is interesting. Do you mean you just type ss before a Youtbe link, for example? And yeah, I totally agree about the free apps one finds through google seeming super fishy and phishy, with all these malware-y pop-ups etc. That sketchiness is why I’m still considering Wondershare. I don’t want to pay either, for something that many seem to accomplish for free, but for me Wondershare is the only way I’ve had that avoided these other hassles. Just let me know if you or others have any other thoughts.

It’s not a downloader, but allows you to capture the screen. Search OBS Project. I’ve been hesitant to download any of the ‘free’ download tools but this one has received good reviews and works well. Only issue I’ve had recording from YT is the ending when pop-ups appear.

    I use ClipGrab. Works well

Safari browser used to have an extension that could do it, but it’s been blocked lately. I usually just use SnagIt to screen capture a clip, since I often just need a piece of a YT video or some audio for storyboarding purposes and not a really long segment.
