Metal 2 appears to spell the end-of-the-line for legacy Apple hardware. If you’ve been nursing along a Mac Pro tower with updates, it is still possible to install macOS High Sierra. However, these machines are apparently not capable of Metal 2. So if you have an app that relies on Metal 2, it will not install on older Mac Pro towers. The first app I’ve encountered in this situation is Pixelmator Pro. I’m sure over time that there will be others. Will the final release version of FCPX 10.4 (not seeded betas) be another such app?

    From Apple’s list:

    Metal 2
Supported by the following Mac models:

    MacBook (Early 2015 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2012 or newer)
Mac mini (Late 2012 or newer)
    iMac (Late 2012 or newer)
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
