Trying to fix your problem. It is possible that your footage was captured ndf originally and that’s why you are seeing what you’re seeing. Also, it’s best if you split the firewire bus for capture. That means putting your drive (if it’s a firewire drive) and your dsr-11 on separate fw busses; and that is to say buy a firewire card to put your firewire drive on the PCI card and plug your dsr-11 in to the mac. Perhaps you have this already, but it’s hard to say as you haven’t said anything about your capture setup. Try it with one clip in a duplicated project and see what happens.

As for NDF, nope, my footage was definitely originally recorded DF. It was shot on a camera that only can record DF.

As for splitting DSR11 to the Mac, and FW drive to the PCI card – I could try that (take time to find where the best deal is, go buy it), and I might, but I suspect it is not related to that. The reason why is that for several years, and still now, w/FCP4.5, this problem doesn’t happen (as I have FW drive plugged in to FW800 and DSR11 via FW400).

It appears to be related to FCP5.1.4’s capturing, not to the hardware arrangement.

Firewire is not a perfect science. I had the exact same problems, and changing the protocol fixed for me. Please, as a test, just try it. Perhaps there was a setting that was blown in your orig. 4.5 captures. Try that and write back. With rs-422 df/ndf is auto-detected and you won’t have this problem.

I think that with later versions of FCP, the fw transfer protocol got tweaked a bit as it used to work much more reliably with older versions, in newer versions, splitting the bus really helped to clean up a lot of problems.

It has been a long time since I have captured via firewire, this is all coming from memory. Part of the trouble shooting process is trying stuff that might not work or might not be the exact right answer.
