  • Media Player (hardware) for playing 4K Ultra MP4 video only

This is somewhat tangential to the DaVinci Resolve forum, but can anyone recommend media player hardware for playing 4K Ultra MP4 video via a USB SSD drive?

I previously played my videos using VLC media player app with the SSD plugged into the USB port on the XBOX, but the VLC apps no longer works, and my Marantz SR6015 won’t play video directly.

Thus, looking for a media player I can plug a USB SSD into. DO NOT NEED to stream anything else, download apps, access other streaming services, etc.

    Thanks and moo!

    Hey,
so just to clarify, are you looking for an app to use on your xbox to play videos, or for a machine (PC, PlayStation, blueray reader etc) to connect the USB to?

Hi Riccardo. Ideally, yes, I was looking for an XBOX app that would play 4K MP4 videos connected via an SSD USB. However, there are no apps that play 4K video (I have tried them all).

I am therefore researching hardware devices that will allow me to connect an SSD into my Marantz AV receiver via HDMI. (None of the Marantz units will directly play video.) Don’t need to stream anything from the media player; only need to access my personal MP4 videos.

    Have decided to try this:

Brightsign makes the exhibit industry leading standalone media players. Maybe overkill but powerful. Many variations depending on what you need. There’s an inexpensive line called Micca Speck on Amazon that may be sufficient. These are basic but very effective for simple playback. Most models prefer to play from micro sd but many can actually play from usb if you prefer.

Tod, thank you for the info about Brightsign.

For anyone who has a similar problem—trying to play your own edited 4K or HD MP4 videos through an A/V receiver for improved audio (vs. playing through a TV), I ended up purchasing the Dune-HD Magic 4K Plus. I’m very happy with this unit.

I connected the Dune-HD via HDMI out to the Marantz ‘media player’ HDMI in. The Dune Magic 4K instantly finds and plays the attached USB SSD drive. 4K playback is … 4K playback, and the audio through the Marantz is obviously better than connecting through the TV.

I did have one issue initially: when playing a video there was a 2-second video and audio blackout about 1-second into the video. Dune suggested resetting the video mode from ‘Auto’ to 4K 2160p 29Hz in setup. That change solved the initial black-screen blink. Videos now play immediately.

The Magic 4K Plus was less than $140 on Amazon.
