Media offline MESS need assistance
For the avid specialists please excuse the shambles that is about to unfold. So here goes:
I was editing a large project 30+ tapes GFX audio etc. Everything was going fine for this newbie media composer 5 user. I was 80% there when another more pressing project came along but i didnt have enough space on my drives so i copied the entire Avid media folder onto to an external HDD. no consolidate media, nothing, happily assuming that the media mamngement system was as easy to read and sort out as Edius or Premier pro.
Any how fast forward 2 months. Where i tried to copy the media back into the AVID mediafolder on my system and everything fell apart. ( i had been editing other projects in the meantime)
So now i have a situation whereby i have the initial transfer of files on the external, a back up copy of some files on another external, and copies of the bins in the attic and project folder that match but are on a different avid system.
Can a program like mediamover sort this all out for and relink everything together on one drive?
Failing that is there anything else i can do?
I have learnt my lesson about proper media management and the avid way, which is a great program that i throughly enjoy using.

Avid does support what you’re doing no problem. First off, I assume you are using MXF media – not OMF? The below directions are for MXF.
Make sure Avid is closed.
On your external HDD, look inside your “Avid MediaFiles” Folder. There should be a MXF folder, followed by a 1 or a 2 or a 3, etc.
Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1, Avid MediaFiles\MXF\2, etc.
Inside one or more of one of those folders is the media you’re missing. Also in these folders are database files. (msmFMID.mpr and msmMMOB.mdb).
To move this media, delete both of these database files on your new LOCAL storage (i.e. where you are transferring the data too). Next, copy all of the MXF media(but not any the database files in any folder) into the same corresponding folders on the local storage, in the same file Hierarchy. (i.e. Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1).
Next, copy the project files to the place on your local drive where you store them. Mine are in Documents\Shared Avid Projects. If you’re unsure, just search for the “Avid Projects” folder. Do the same with the Attic.
When you relaunch Avid, MC will be unable to find the database files, and will rebuild the databases, by scanning the “new” media in the system. When you select your project, it will relink to the media that Avid is now aware of.

You could open the avid media tool and use it to figure out whats on a given drive.
Then select the clips you’d like to move and choose Clip…Consolidate.
You can then copy them where you’d like (or tell it to the delete the original and you’d be moving them.)
